Jia Bhoreli River

The Jia Bhoreli River, also known as the Kameng River in Arunachal Pradesh, is a major tributary of the Brahmaputra River. It is a vital waterway for the region, supporting local communities and a diverse ecosystem, including the Nameri National Park.

The river originates from a glacial lake below the snow-capped Gori Chen mountain in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, in the eastern Himalayas.

In Arunachal Pradesh, it is known as the Kameng River.

It flows through the West and East Kameng districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Upon entering the plains of Assam at Bhalukpong, it takes the name “Jia Bhoreli.” The name “Jia” means “alive” in Assamese, a fitting name for this lively river.

It flows for about 66 km through the Sonitpur district of Assam before merging with the Brahmaputra River near Tezpur.

The river is a popular destination for adventure sports and eco-tourism.

Angling for the Golden Mahseer is a well-known activity, with a “tag and release” policy to support conservation efforts.

Other activities include river rafting and trekking along its banks.
