EATING OUT

The food of the north-eastern states differs quite a bit from the typical spicy and rich Indian food. These dishes are flavoured with herbs which are indigenous to the region and rice is a staple food.

Assamese food is deliciously mild and finely pH-balanced using a unique banana-alkaline extract called khar.

Guwahati - Places to eat traditional cuisine

Delicacy – This restaurant offers a wide selection of northeastern cuisine styles. There are almost a dozen types of rice available here.

Paradise – A well known place for Assamese cuisine covering two floors. Downstairs is economical whereas upstairs is air-conditioned, more attractive and more expensive.

Khorika – A fairly new restaurant offering traditional Assamese cuisine.

Naga Kitchen – A popular restaurant serving Naga cuisine in traditional wooden Naga utensils. Simply furnished, the food is delicious and the service fast.

 

SHOPPING

Artfed - Well stocked with beautiful bamboo crafts, wicker-work, hand woven shawls, carved rhinos etc.

Silk Shops - Several shops in Guwahati Pan Bazaar specialise in Assam's famous muga and pat golden-toned silks.

Konyak - This new outlet is well stocked with handloom and handicrafts of the Northeast.

River People - This outlet also stocks a god collection of handloom and handicraft items from the Northeast.
